THE GEAR I USE
Latest additons
Tall Table – Stratus Big D
Finally a 900mm (proper bench height table!!), really nice quality, light, strong rust proof and tough. Code “FTF” to save 15%
Water Filters – WOMO
My main caravan tank filter is the WOMO Traveller (Code FTF20 for $20 off that or the Mini Inline filter) and I often use it with the Water Softener when I am in rural areas. I also carry the Xplorer Box (Code FTF100 for $100 off) which means I can fill my tanks from any fresh water creeks or lakes
Flippers scrapers, scrubbers etc – The full OXO Set
The best complete outdoor cookware set I’ve come across. The pans, flipper and scrubbers are my favourites
Pans – Oxo 8″ and 10″
Love the removable handles and contain no plastic or rubber so they don’t melt like all the others
Julienne Peeler – OXO
It just makes the bloody best fried potatoes with no effort.
Lightweight Charcoal/Fire Pit and Grill – Wolf & Grizzly
I picked this up as something to keep in the car for a quick 1-2 person cook using sticks/charcoal/whatever for those times when they insist on a firepit, but you don’t want to drive around with 10kg extra in the car the whole time. It is surprisingly solid for how incredibly tiny and light it is.
Super Long Tongs – Donkey Long Tongs
I don’t know how many people have told me I needed some long grabbers for firewood and I always ignored them because I just thought using a stick did the job. Turns out I was wrong and these things have been bloody great for either using as tongs or firewood movers (if I was to pick one, I’d go firewood mover). Super precise, safe just the name alone has led me to some great conversations around camp.
Plates and Bowls – Barebones
I’ve had these for nearly 3 years now and they all look like they day I bought them. Super hardy, very stylish and come up a treat in photos, I recommend the charcoal and the white to really pop and make the food more appetising.
Hibachi Charcoal Grill – Firemate Hibachi Grills
My party piece at home when I want a quick weeknight dinner on charcoal or to impress mates with restaurant quality Japanese food. The number of features is insane and workmanship is ridiculous.
Knife Sharpener – OzBraai
I’ve tested so many sharpeners over the years and they have all been pretty rubbish (for anything under$200) but this little thing is completely idiot proof and turns your knives back in to a razor in a few seconds. I’m so impressed.
Cooking Gear
Grill Basket – OzBraai Camp Braai
I have always been a huge fan of the grill baskets, but this is the best I have come across. Retractable handle, great frame with a clip to hold it steady and comes in a nice bag.
Large Fire Pit – Compact Braai – OzBraai
This is my new favourite fire cooking tool for home or in my camper trailer. It’s height adjustable, light,, super versatile, nice and big and really well made.
Chef Knife – OzBraai
After using the cleaver for over a year and loving it, I have just picked up the chef’s knife and first impressions are that we have another winner on our hands.
Fire Grid – OzBraai
This has been months in the making – I worked with OzBraai to design this and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
Small Grill Basket – OzBraai Travel Braai
The little brother of the Camp Braai, this has quickly turned in to my favourite for smaller meals, it’s ultra compact, had a retractable handle and I has a great little frame.
Fire Pit – Red Roads
I have used other (far more expensive) brands of fire pit and I genuinely far prefer this kit. The main draw card over the competition is the quality of the bag – Thick, lined Australian Canvas.
I also love my Red Roads Riser Kit which brings it off the ground a bit and means you don’t burn the grass. It’s also far more social to stand around it up high.
Big Knife – OzBraai Cleaver
It may look big and clumsy but it is far from it. Being carbon steel it does need to be cared for but it is sure to give you years of faithful service.
Camp Oven – Southern Metal Spinners 10“
I have been using this camp oven for a few years and since getting it I have given away all of my cast iron gear. It’s 75% lighter than cast, performs just as well as it, and will only dent, not crack, if you drop it. Australian made too.
Cooking Tripod – Red Roads
After a few years of not being able to get them, they are back – the best cooking tripods on the market, a nice high folding tripod that works really well over a ground fire or over a fire pit.
Spun (blue steel) fry pan/skillet – Solidtechnics
I honestly never thought I would be able to find a lightweight pan that could give a good sear, but this absolutely nails it. It’s a staple in my kit now.
Wood Bags/ Bin Bags / Chainsaw Bags – Kelmatt
I have been looking for a good bin bag for inside the Delica and a bag for my big chainsaw (MS500i) but haven’t been able to find anything, so I spoke to the guys at Kelmatt and actually worked with them to make a great bin bag for people who don’t have a spare wheel on the back of their car and/or want to carry firewood.
Wok – Hillbilly
I used a cheap wok for years and I have to say it took a lot for me to stop using it, but the folding handle with this wok sold me. It takes up a fraction of the space in my drawers and can be used for nearly anything.
Portable wood stove – BioLite
Because I don’t like using gas, but sometimes you just want to boil the kettle. Great for summer.
Pots – Primus Stainless Steel
I’ve only just got these and while they feel good and have features like the drain holes on the lid. We’ll see how they go!
Re-sealable containers/tupperware – Sea to Summit
Collapsible containers I use for ingredients and leftovers, these are the only containers I have found that actually stay sealed off road, even with liquid in them.
Salt and Pepper Mills
Handmade in the South West of WA, beautifully finished with the best mechanism money can buy. No more crappy supermarket ones here.
Wooden stirrer/flippers
Also hand made in the South West, technically they are salad servers, but I use them for everything
Cutlery – Barebones
Just really bloody nice cutlery
Camp Oven Stand/Trivet – OzBraai
I have had a few variations on these, but this is one I helped work on with OzBraai to be the best on the market – it’s super strong so you can put your big heavy pots on it, but it has a triangle in the middle so even the tiniest kettles or a mokka pot can sit on it happily.
Leather Knife Roll – OzBraai
I am in love with this thing – it’s just the nicest way to carry these awesome knives – and the custom logos are a great touch.
Washing Up Kit – Sea to Summit
This is a very new addition, and it has saved me a ton of space – it comes with everything you need. The flexible sink takes a little bit to get used to (I kept thinking the water would spill, but it doesn’t), but it works better than any other flexible sink I’ve used.
I mainly use the traditional Zippo lighter and the Firefast torch, but I also keep the Emergency Kit and Mag Strike in the car for when I want to practice my skills or for an actual emergency.
I also light nearly all my fires with the Tinder Shreds – they are by far the best fire lighters I have ever used!
Camping Gear
Chairs – Homecamp
Very comfy and very well made chairs that actually look good at camp. Why are so many chairs so ugly?
Medical Kits – Survival
After a lot of back and forth with different setups, we finally found one we like (my wife is a Doctor, so she is very particular about this. Very well equipped, labelled and expandable. (Discount code: F2F20)
Fire lighting – Zippo gear
I mainly use the traditional Zippo lighter and the Firefast torch, but I also keep the Emergency Kit and Mag Strike in the car for when I want to practice my skills or for an actual emergency.
I also light nearly all my fires with the Tinder Shreds – they are by far the best fire lighters I have ever used!
Ground mats – CGear Multimat – code FTF20 for $10 off
I’ve had a lot of ground mats over the years and I’ve always been reluctant to spend the extra on the CGear, but after using them, I can definitely say they are worth the extra. Every one of our mates that has been away with us has agreed and gone and got one themselves.
Doormats and step covers – MukMat
They last ages, hold a ton of sand and there are tons of sizes. I think we have 6 of them now for inside, outside, the back of the Prado, the steps and I use one in my office.
Boxes – Wolf Pack Pro by Front Runner
Water tight, light, well priced and stackable. They tick all the boxes (pun intended) for remote travel.
Straps – Stratchit by Front Runner
The love child of an occy strap and a pull strap, these work for strapping anything from a pillow to 100kg of firewood. The clips at the end also mean they never come undone. (Discount code: F2F20)
Can be used for sitting, but I use it as a stand for my boxes, or a foot rest. Very nicely made.
Blankets – Ghost Outdoors
Outdoor super soft and warm woolen blankets that we’ve been using for years
Spotlight or Head Torch – Olight Warrior X Pro or Perun 2
I’ve had so many head torches over the years and never really been that impressed with the power, reliability or battery life on any of them. But these are honestly so bloody robust, so bright and the batteries last so well (rechargeable too).
Unbreakable wine glass box – Explorer Box
Perfect for those who want to have a glass of wine (not a plastic cup) and do a bit of offroad. It feels very luxurious drinking out of a really nice glass in remote locations.
The only chair we bring when we go away as a family. In fact, it’s the only chair I bring when it’s just me and Fred too.
Chair – Helinox Sunset and Savannah (tan)
So small, so light and actually comfortable. I never take it out of my car.
Fridge/freezer – Snomaster 81.5l Traveller – use code FTF20 for $20 off
I’ve run a lot of different brands, but this was so good I ended up building my whole rear storage system around it. Not very well known in Australia, but they have an amazing reputation in South Africa – very rugged.
Tables – Kaon and Front Runner
I only use stainless tables because they are heat proof, tough, easy to clean and last a lifetime./span>
Prado door table
Stand alone table
Cups – Front runner
Love the lids, they keep drinks hot or cold for hours and they are really well built and finished – comparable to my Yeti gear for half the price
Stubby Holder – Yeti
The last sip will be as cold as the first. This thing is a beast.
Get the Extender that fits a second can if you want to go pro.
Just the best thought out and best made swag I have found. It’s all about the little details that make this thing.
This is a full-custom setup, but they can make you anything you like.
Water System – Designed by Pro Camp Solutions (now Custom Overland Solutions)
Seaflo 4l/min pumps to a J-Flex 9m air hose (discontinued), connected to a bidet tap – Fed by a Kaon Stainless water tank.
Collapsible bucket – Sea to Summit – code F2F20 for $10 off
Folds up really small and great for carrying water from the beach/streams for putting out fires, or for anything else you’d use a bucket for.
Wilderness Wash – Sea to Summit – code F2F20 for $10 off
The best hand wash I have used for camping, super concentrated so you carry hardly any of it and it’s eco friendly.
